Camp under the stars, just like the original residents of North America.
The Setting
Chemin-A-Haut State Park (Bastrop) sits on 503 acres of tree-lined bluffs that takes its name from the French word meaning "high road," which was the route used by Native Americans many years ago in their seasonal migrations.
The Facility
Twenty-six campsites offer the chance to get close to nature, while a primitive camping area can accommodate up to 20 brave souls who truly want to “rough it.” But Chemin-A-Haut State Park also was designed with children in mind. Two playgrounds in the day-use area are a favorite spot of younger patrons, as is the wading pool in the swimming complex.
Several varieties of freshwater species can be found in Big Slough Lake, for both the bankside fishermen and those out in boats. Rental boats are available for visitors. If you’re more interested in a stroll through the woods, there are two walking trails and an 8-mile equestrian trail.
